Motorisoproteiinit, also known as motor proteins, are a class of proteins that move along biological tracks, such as actin filaments or microtubules, within cells. This movement is fueled by the chemical energy derived from the hydrolysis of ATP or GTP. Motor proteins play crucial roles in a wide variety of cellular processes, including intracellular transport, muscle contraction, cell division, and cell motility.

The three main families of motor proteins are myosins, kinesins, and dyneins. Myosins are primarily associated with actin filaments and are responsible for muscle contraction, as well as a range of non-muscle cellular movements like cytokinesis and intracellular transport. Kinesins and dyneins are associated with microtubules. Kinesins generally move cargo towards the plus end of microtubules, while dyneins move cargo towards the minus end. This directional transport is essential for delivering organelles, vesicles, and other cellular components to their proper locations.

The mechanism by which motor proteins generate force and movement involves a cycle of binding, ATP hydrolysis, conformational changes, and release. A specific region of the motor protein, often called the "head" or "motor domain," interacts with the cytoskeletal track and binds ATP. ATP hydrolysis leads to a change in the protein's shape, which in turn causes it to "walk" along the track. The binding and release of ATP and the track are tightly regulated to ensure efficient and controlled movement. Defects in motor protein function can lead to various diseases, highlighting their fundamental importance in cellular health.
