Motorhajtások, commonly translated as motor drives or motor control systems, are essential components in modern automation and machinery. They are responsible for controlling the speed, torque, and direction of electric motors, which are the workhorses of many industrial and domestic applications.

The primary function of a motor drive is to convert electrical power from a source, typically the mains supply, into a form that can be used to operate an electric motor efficiently and precisely. This often involves modifying the voltage and frequency of the electrical supply. For instance, variable frequency drives (VFDs) are widely used to control AC induction motors. By altering the frequency of the AC power supplied to the motor, VFDs can precisely control the motor's rotational speed. This allows for smooth acceleration and deceleration, energy savings by matching motor speed to the load requirements, and improved process control.

DC motors, while less common in many new industrial applications, are also controlled using specific types of motor drives. These drives regulate the voltage supplied to the motor, thereby controlling its speed and torque.

Beyond simple speed control, motor drives offer advanced features such as torque limiting, soft starting and stopping to reduce mechanical stress, reversing capabilities, and protection against overloads, over-voltages, and under-voltages. The integration of motor drives with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and other automation systems has further enhanced their capabilities, enabling complex and responsive automated processes. The development of motor drives has been driven by the need for greater energy efficiency, improved performance, and increased automation across various industries, from manufacturing and robotics to renewable energy and transportation.
