Motheyeinspired describes materials or textures engineered to mimic the nano-scale surface patterns found on the eyes of many nocturnal moths. These designs aim to suppress optical reflections and improve light transmission by creating a surface that interacts with light on a scale smaller than its wavelengths.

Mechanism: The surfaces use subwavelength nanostructures, often arranged as nipple-like protrusions or a quasi-gradual roughness, to produce an effective refractive index gradient from air to the substrate. This reduces Fresnel reflections across a broad spectral range and for wide incidence angles.

Background: The concept emerged from biomimicry research into how moths see at night, with practical applications in optics and photonics expanding in the early 2000s and beyond. The term moth-eye refers to the natural pattern that inspired engineered versions, which aim to replicate the function of minimizing glare.

Fabrication methods: Manufacturing uses nanoimprint lithography, reactive ion etching, chemical etching, laser texturing, anodic templates, or self-assembly to create dense arrays of sub-wavelength features on glass, polymers, or coatings.

Applications: Motheyeinspired textures are used for anti-reflective coatings in solar cells and display covers, camera lenses and photodetectors, architectural glazing, and protective coatings where glare reduction and improved light coupling are advantageous.

Advantages and challenges: The approach offers broadband, angle-insensitive anti-reflection and potential efficiency gains. Challenges include durability under wear, environmental stability, manufacturing cost, and integration with curved or flexible substrates.
