Morsen

Morsen is the act of transmitting information using Morse code, a signaling method that encodes text as sequences of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes). In German and Dutch, morsen is the verb for encoding or transmitting in Morse code; in English, the verb form is rarely used, and one would say to send Morse code or to transmit in Morse code.

Morse code assigns patterns to letters, numerals, and some punctuation. In the International Morse Code, timing is standardized: a dot is the basic unit, a dash is three units, the gap between elements within a character is one unit, between characters is three units, and between words is seven units. The code originated in the 1830s and 1840s, developed by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail, and was adopted across telegraph networks and later adapted for radio communication. The International version gradually superseded earlier variants and was standardized by international bodies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Uses and history: Morse code enabled long-distance text communication over telegraph wires and, later, radio. It played a crucial role in maritime communication and railway signaling. The SOS distress signal (··· --- ··) became a widely recognized emergency pattern. Operators could read signals by ear as tones or by sight as flashes, making it usable in varying conditions.

Modern relevance: Although digital and automated modes have largely replaced Morse in many services, Morse code remains taught in some amateur radio licenses and is valued for reliability in noisy channels and low-bandwidth situations. It remains a historical and educational reference in the history of telecommunications.
