Morhen

Kaer Morhen, commonly referred to as Morhen, is the ancestral fortress of the Witchers of the School of the Wolf. It is located in the remote Blue Mountains in the northern realm of Kaedwen and serves as the order’s traditional stronghold and primary training ground for novice witchers.

Historically, Kaer Morhen is one of the oldest Witcher keeps, dating back to early centuries of the Witcher lineage. It functions as a residence, a site for alchemical work, and the place where young recruits undertake the trials that grant them witcher status. The fortress has endured through wars and upheavals, and its keep is closely associated with elder Witchers such as Vesemir who impart knowledge to newer generations.

In the Witcher media, Kaer Morhen is depicted as a secluded, fortified compound with training yards, workshops, and storage facilities. It is central to the survival and continuity of the School of the Wolf and to the backstories of characters like Geralt of Rivia, Vesemir, Eskel, and Lambert. The fortress appears in key plotlines across games and novels, including significant battles and events involving the fortress itself and its inhabitants, as well as the involvement of Ciri in later narratives.

Kaer Morhen’s enduring significance lies in its symbolism as a last bastion of Witcher culture—a site where craft, loyalty, and the burdens of mutation are transmitted between generations and preserved amid a hostile world.
