Mordantkombinationer, often translated as mordant combinations or mordant pairings, refers to the practice of using multiple mordants in a dyeing process to achieve specific color results or improve dye fastness. Mordants are substances that bind dye molecules to fibers, and their selection significantly influences the final color and its permanence.

Different mordants interact with dyes and fibers in unique ways. For example, alum is a common mordant that brightens many dyes. Iron, another mordant, tends to deepen and darken colors, often shifting them towards shades of grey or brown. Tin can produce very bright, vibrant hues, but it can also weaken some fibers. Combining these mordants, or others such as copper, zinc, or even plant-based mordants like oak galls, allows dyers to create complex color palettes and enhance the light and wash fastness of their dyed materials.

The specific order in which mordants are applied, the ratio of each mordant used, and the type of fiber being dyed are all critical factors in achieving predictable results. Experimentation is a key aspect of mordant combination, as the interactions can be intricate and sometimes unexpected.
