MontgomeryDrüsen, known in English as Montgomery glands or Montgomery tubercles, are a group of small sebaceous glands located in the areola surrounding the nipple. They appear as tiny raised bumps and are a normal anatomical feature in humans and some mammals.

Anatomy and secretion: The glands are embedded in the areolar tissue around the nipple and typically form visible clusters. They secrete a lipid-rich, oily substance that helps lubricate and protect the nipple and surrounding skin. The secretions may also play a role in maintaining the integrity of the areolar surface during lactation.

Function and physiological significance: The primary purpose of Montgomery glands is to keep the areolar area moisturized and to provide a barrier against irritants and microorganisms during breastfeeding. Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, and lactation can influence the size and visibility of the glands, making them more prominent in some individuals.

Clinical considerations: Montgomery glands are a normal variant and usually do not require treatment. They can, on rare occasions, become obstructed, leading to Montgomery gland cysts or tender nodules. Inflammation or infection of the areola or surrounding skin can occasionally involve these glands, presenting with redness, swelling, or discomfort. Distinguishing Montgomery glands from other nipple or breast conditions is generally straightforward, but persistent lumpiness, unusual discharge, or severe symptoms warrant medical evaluation.
