Montarellan

Montarellan is a town in the fictional region of Valoria, on the eastern coast of the continent of Ardentia. It lies along the Monta River at the foot of the Montane Hills, about 60 kilometers northeast of Port Valia. The population was estimated at 7,900 in 2020. The town is known for its stone architecture and seasonal markets.

The Monta River provides irrigation and historical power for mills. The climate is temperate with mild summers and cool winters, and rainfall is fairly distributed.

Founded in the 12th century by the Montar settlers, Montarellan grew around a water-powered mill and a river crossing. It prospered as a regional trading node through the late medieval period. The 16th century brought plague and population decline, followed by gradual recovery. The arrival of the railway in 1865 connected Montarellan to larger cities, stimulating industry, especially textiles and leather goods. Municipal reforms in the late 20th century reorganized local governance.

Today the economy blends crafts, small-scale manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. The workforce is diverse, with a mix of traditional crafts and modern service sectors. Montarellan is administered by a town council and a mayor.

Notable sites include the Old Mill, the Chapel of Saint Verna, and the stone Montarellan Bridge over the Monta River. The annual Festival of Lights attracts visitors in autumn, featuring lantern processions and local music. The town also hosts the Montarellan Institute of Arts, and a weekly market in the town square.

Notable residents include the sculptor Lona Sirel and the author Oren Taal.
