Montanoceratops

Montanoceratops is a genus of herbivorous ceratopsid dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of North America, known from Montana. The only named species is Montanoceratops ornatus. The name means “ornate Montana horned face.”

Fossils of Montanoceratops come from the Two Medicine Formation of Montana, dating to roughly 76–74 million years ago. The genus is based on a partial skull and associated postcranial material, with the holotype housed in a museum collection. The preserved skeleton indicates a small-bodied ceratopsid compared with later, larger horned dinosaurs.

Montanoceratops is interpreted as a basal ceratopsid with relatively simple skull ornamentation compared with later ceratopsids, featuring a short frill and modest horn development, along with a beaked mouth and dental batteries typical of ceratopsians.

In classification, Montanoceratops is generally placed as a basal member of Ceratopsidae near the origin of the group. Its primitive features provide insight into ceratopsid evolution, though the exact placement has varied between analyses, reflecting ongoing scientific discussion.

Paleoecologically, Montanoceratops inhabited a floodplain ecosystem with abundant plant life and coexisted with other dinosaurs of the Western Interior. Its fossils help document early ceratopsid diversity in western North America during the Late Cretaceous.
