Monitorius

Monitorius is a modular, open-source framework for monitoring distributed computer systems. It collects metrics, events, and traces from diverse environments, aggregates them, and presents data to dashboards and alerting systems. The design prioritizes scalability, interoperability, and low overhead in cloud and edge deployments.

Etymology and concept: The name combines the English monitor with the Latin suffix -ius, signaling a formal oversight system. It aims to unify data collection across on-premises, cloud, and edge environments via a consistent model and pluggable backends.

Architecture: The main components are Monitorius Core (server), Monitorius Agent (host-level collector), Monitorius Edge (gateway for remote networks), and Monitorius Gateway (central access point). Core stores time-series data, manages configuration, and routes alerts; Agents gather and push metrics or are polled; Edge devices perform local aggregation to reduce bandwidth.

Data model and protocols: Monitorius supports metrics, events, and traces, compatible with OpenMetrics and OpenTelemetry. Communication uses HTTP, gRPC, or MQTT. Backends include InfluxDB, Prometheus, or SQL stores; dashboards resemble Grafana interfaces. Alerting supports severities, silences, and routing.

Deployment and use: Suitable for data centers, cloud-native apps, and IoT networks. It integrates with Kubernetes via operators and native collectors. Security includes TLS, authentication, and role-based access control.

History and variants: Conceived in the late 2010s as a research project, Monitorius has grown into a community-maintained framework. Subprojects include Monitorius Core, Monitorius Edge, and Monitorius Cloud.
