Moniraskauksia, often referred to as multiple pregnancies, describes a pregnancy where more than one fetus develops in the uterus. The most common types are twins, where there are two fetuses, followed by triplets (three fetuses), quadruplets (four fetuses), and so on, with higher-order multiples being progressively rarer.

The occurrence of moniraskauksia can be influenced by several factors. Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF) significantly increase the likelihood of multiple pregnancies, as multiple embryos are often transferred to the uterus. Maternal age is another factor, with older women having a higher chance of conceiving multiples, particularly fraternal twins. Genetics also plays a role, as a family history of fraternal twins can increase a woman's chances.

Moniraskauksia present unique considerations for both the mother and the developing fetuses. Pregnant individuals carrying multiples are at a higher risk for certain complications, including gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and preterm labor. The fetuses themselves face increased risks, such as lower birth weight and developmental delays, due to the shared uterine environment and potential for premature birth. Careful monitoring and specialized prenatal care are crucial throughout a multiple pregnancy to ensure the best possible outcomes for all involved.
