Monikkokuviointia

Monikkokuviointia, often translated as "polyomino tiling" or "polyominoes" in English, refers to the mathematical problem of covering a given region or shape with polyominoes, which are geometric shapes formed by connecting equal squares edge to edge. A polyomino is defined by its order, which is the number of squares it contains. For example, a monomino is a single square, a domino is composed of two squares, a tromino of three, and a tetromino of four, and so on. The most well-known polyominoes are the tetrominoes, famously used in the game Tetris.

The study of monikkokuviointia involves determining whether a particular region can be tiled by a specific set of polyominoes or by polyominoes of a certain order. This often leads to complex combinatorial problems. For instance, the question of whether a rectangle can be tiled by a given set of polyominoes is a classic area of research.
