In the method of moments, the theoretical moments of a distribution are equated to the corresponding sample moments calculated from observed data. For example, to estimate the mean (μ) of a population, the sample mean (x̄) is used as an estimator. Similarly, to estimate the variance (σ²), the sample variance (s²) is often employed. If a distribution has *k* unknown parameters, the method of moments typically involves calculating the first *k* theoretical moments of the distribution as functions of these parameters and then setting them equal to the first *k* sample moments. However, moment estimators are not always the most efficient, especially for small sample sizes, and they may not always be unbiased. Despite these limitations, the method of moments provides a straightforward and intuitive approach to parameter estimation that serves as a foundational concept in statistical inference.
