Moils
A moil is a type of pickaxe, a long-handled tool with a pointed head used for breaking up and dislodging rock or other hard materials. The term is often used interchangeably with pick, though historically "moil" could refer to a heavier, more robust version. Moils are characterized by their pointed end, which is designed to penetrate and fracture materials, and sometimes a chisel or blade-like end on the opposite side for cutting or splitting. Their primary use is in manual excavation, mining, and construction, where mechanical equipment cannot be easily employed or for detailed work requiring precision. The design of a moil allows for concentrated force to be applied to a small area, making it effective for breaking stubborn ground or removing debris. Historically, moils have been essential tools for miners and quarrymen.
