Modulaatiokoodauksella, often translated as modulation coding, is a technique used in digital communications to improve the reliability and efficiency of data transmission. It involves a combination of modulation and error correction coding. Modulation is the process of encoding information onto a carrier signal, such as radio waves. By varying properties of the carrier wave like amplitude, frequency, or phase, digital data bits can be represented. Error correction coding, on the other hand, adds redundant information to the data before modulation. This redundancy allows the receiver to detect and correct errors that may occur during transmission due to noise or interference.

The core idea behind modulation coding is to leverage the strengths of both processes synergistically. By carefully selecting the modulation scheme and the error correction code, it's possible to achieve a lower bit error rate (BER) for a given signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared to using modulation or coding alone. This leads to more robust communication systems that can operate effectively in challenging environments or with lower power consumption. Examples of modulation coding techniques include trellis-coded modulation (TCM) and convolutional codes combined with various modulation schemes like QPSK or QAM. These techniques are fundamental in many modern communication standards, including Wi-Fi, cellular networks, and satellite communications, enabling higher data rates and more dependable connections.
