Modeselectromagnetic is a term used to describe methods and devices that selectively excite, detect, or manipulate specific electromagnetic modes within a structure. The concept encompasses techniques in waveguides, resonators, fibers, and metamaterials that distinguish among different modal contents, such as TE and TM modes or hybrid modes, in order to control signal propagation and field distribution.

Conceptually, modeselectromagnetic covers strategies that control mode content by geometry, material response, or dynamic modulation. In waveguides and optical fibers, mode selectivity aims to excite or suppress particular modes to improve signal integrity, bandwidth, or multiplexing. In resonators, selective mode excitation can enhance quality factors, sensitivity, or functional response. In metasurfaces and metamaterials, engineered anisotropy and dispersion enable selective support or rejection of certain modal components, including polarization or spatial profiles.
