Moderaterna

Moderaterna, officially Moderata samlingspartiet and commonly known as the Moderate Party, is a centre-right liberal-conservative political party in Sweden. It is one of the country’s largest political parties and has influenced Swedish politics since the early 20th century. The party traces its roots to 1904, when it was founded as Allmänna valmansförbundet; over the decades it underwent several name changes before adopting the Moderaterna designation. Ideologically, Moderaterna advocates a market-based economy, lower taxes, deregulation where appropriate, and reforms aimed at making welfare services more efficient. It supports private sector involvement in public services, a robust legal system, and Swedish EU membership.

Moderaterna has been a central actor in the Swedish centre-right, forming part of the Alliance coalition from 2004 to 2014 and governing from 2006 to 2014 under Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt. In recent years it has again led the government under Ulf Kristersson (since 2022), with a coalition comprising the Christian Democrats and Liberals and with parliamentary support from the Sweden Democrats.

In the European Parliament, Moderaterna sits with the European People’s Party group. The party emphasizes fiscal responsibility, structural reforms, and a pragmatic approach to welfare policy within Sweden’s social model. Moderaterna remains a key player in Swedish politics, advocating reform within a market-oriented framework while participating in coalitions and governance at the national and European levels.
