Modellnövényekben, or model plants in Hungarian, refers to plant species that are extensively studied and used as experimental systems to understand fundamental biological processes. These organisms are chosen for specific characteristics that make them amenable to genetic and molecular analysis, allowing researchers to investigate complex phenomena like development, genetics, disease resistance, and responses to environmental stimuli.

Key attributes of model plants include short generation times, small genome sizes, ease of cultivation in laboratory settings, and the availability of extensive genetic and genomic resources. They often exhibit high rates of self-pollination or readily produce viable seeds, facilitating controlled crosses and the generation of large populations for genetic studies. Furthermore, the ability to efficiently transform their genomes and regenerate whole plants from single cells or tissues is crucial for functional genomics and genetic engineering.

Commonly used model plants include Arabidopsis thaliana, a small flowering plant with a well-annotated genome and a wealth of research tools. Other important models include the bacterium Escherichia coli for basic molecular biology, yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) for eukaryotic cell processes, the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, and the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, all of which have contributed immensely to our understanding of genetics and development. In the plant kingdom, besides Arabidopsis, species like maize (Zea mays), rice (Oryza sativa), and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) serve as vital models for studying crop-specific traits, photosynthesis, and plant-pathogen interactions.
