Modellauto

A Modellauto is a miniature, scale-accurate representation of a motor vehicle produced for collecting, display, or hobby use. The term covers both static display models and functioning remote-controlled cars. In German-language contexts it may refer to the general category as well as individual items in a catalog.

Static modellautos are produced in a range of scales, with 1:64 and 1:43 common for mass-market collectibles, and 1:18, 1:24, and 1:12 preferred by high-detail releases. They come as ready-built models or as construction kits that require assembly and painting.

Materials and construction vary. Die-cast models are usually made from zinc alloy (Zamak) with plastic components, while some kits use plastic or resin. Finishes include detailed painting, decaling, and weathering to reproduce authentic liveries and markings. Some models aim for exact, factory-correct details.

Remote-controlled modellautos (RC cars) add propulsion and steering, enabling driving as well as display. The subject matter often overlaps with scale replicas and licensing from car manufacturers, with brands such as Kyosho, Tamiya, and Traxxas among the better-known RC producers, while traditional scale models are made by specialized die-cast and kit manufacturers.

Collectors may seek limited editions, period-correct packaging, and certificates of authenticity. The market is global and active through hobby shops, model shops, online retailers, auctions, and model exhibitions. Care guidance emphasizes keeping away from direct sunlight and humidity, and using display cases or original packaging to preserve value.
