Mittaustyyppi

Mittaustyyppi refers to the classification of data based on its properties and the level of information it conveys. There are four primary measurement types, often referred to as scales of measurement: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. Each type has distinct characteristics that determine the types of statistical analyses that can be applied to the data.

Nominal data is categorical and lacks any inherent order. Examples include gender, eye color, or car brand. With nominal data, you can only determine if two values are the same or different.

Ordinal data is also categorical but possesses a meaningful order or rank. However, the differences between the ranks are not necessarily equal or quantifiable. Examples include Likert scales (e.g., strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly disagree), survey responses like "first," "second," or "third," or educational levels (e.g., high school, bachelor's, master's).

Interval data has a meaningful order, and the differences between values are equal and quantifiable. However, interval data lacks a true zero point, meaning that zero does not represent the absence of the quantity being measured. Temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit is a common example; while 0 degrees Celsius is a specific point, it doesn't mean there's no temperature.

Ratio data is the most informative type. It has a meaningful order, equal intervals between values, and a true zero point. This true zero signifies the absence of the quantity. Examples include height, weight, age, or income. With ratio data, you can perform all arithmetic operations, including multiplication and division, and interpret ratios meaningfully. For instance, someone who is 2 meters tall is twice as tall as someone who is 1 meter tall. Understanding the mittaustyyppi is crucial for selecting appropriate statistical methods and interpreting results accurately.
