Mittaongelma, often translated as the "measurement problem" in English, is a central conceptual difficulty in the foundational understanding of quantum mechanics. It arises from the apparent conflict between the continuous, deterministic evolution of quantum systems described by the Schrödinger equation and the discontinuous, probabilistic nature of measurement outcomes.

Before a measurement is made, a quantum system, such as an electron, can exist in a superposition of multiple states simultaneously. For instance, an electron might be in a superposition of spin-up and spin-down states. However, when a measurement is performed, the system is found to be in one specific state with a certain probability, and the superposition collapses into that single outcome. This collapse is instantaneous and probabilistic, a process not accounted for by the deterministic Schrödinger equation.

The mittaongelma grapples with how and why this collapse occurs. Various interpretations of quantum mechanics attempt to address this issue. The Copenhagen interpretation, one of the earliest and most widely taught, posits that the act of measurement itself causes the collapse, with the observer playing a crucial role. Other interpretations, such as the many-worlds interpretation, avoid the collapse altogether by suggesting that all possible outcomes of a measurement are realized in separate, branching universes. Still other approaches, like Bohmian mechanics, introduce hidden variables to provide a deterministic explanation for measurement outcomes.
