This structure is determined by the chemical composition of the mineral and the type of bonding between its constituent atoms. Mineral structures can be classified into several categories based on their crystal systems. The seven crystal systems are cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, hexagonal, trigonal, monoclinic, and triclinic. Each system is characterized by specific symmetry elements and lattice parameters. For example, the cubic system has equal edge lengths and right angles between them, while the hexagonal system has a six-fold rotational symmetry axis.

Metallic bonding is characterized by the presence of free electrons, and van der Waals forces are weak intermolecular attractions. The type of bonding influences a mineral's physical properties, such as hardness, cleavage, and electrical conductivity.
