Minenointi, also known as mine clearance or mine countermeasures, is the process of locating, identifying, and removing or rendering harmless landmines and other explosive remnants of war (ERW) from an area. This process is crucial for ensuring the safety and security of civilians and military personnel, as well as for facilitating the return of refugees and the resumption of economic activities in affected regions.

Mine clearance operations can be conducted using various methods, including manual demining, mechanical demining, and remote sensing technologies. Manual demining involves trained personnel using metal detectors and other tools to locate and disarm mines. Mechanical demining uses specialized equipment such as mine plows, which can clear large areas quickly but may not be effective in all terrains. Remote sensing technologies, including drones and satellite imagery, are increasingly being used to identify potential minefields and guide clearance operations.

The challenges of mine clearance include the vast number of mines left behind in conflicts, the diversity of mine types, and the difficulty of working in hazardous environments. Additionally, the presence of mines can disrupt local economies, hinder humanitarian efforts, and perpetuate cycles of violence. These include the Mine Ban Treaty, which aims to prohibit the use, stockpiling, production, and transfer of antipersonnel mines, as well as the Mine Action Training Centre, which provides training and technical assistance to mine clearance organizations worldwide.
