Mikrovazikuláris refers to extremely small blood vessels. The term is derived from the Greek word "mikros" meaning small, and the Latin word "vasculum" meaning vessel. These vessels are primarily capillaries, which are the smallest of the blood vessels and form a network throughout the body. Capillaries are essential for the exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, and waste products between the blood and the body's tissues.

The structure of mikrovazikuláris vessels is characterized by very thin walls, often just a single layer of endothelial cells. This thinness facilitates efficient diffusion. Their small diameter means that red blood cells often have to pass through in single file. The overall density of this mikrovazikuláris network in a particular tissue is a key determinant of its metabolic activity and ability to function. For example, tissues with high oxygen and nutrient demands, such as muscle or brain tissue, have a particularly dense mikrovazikuláris network.

Conditions affecting these tiny vessels can have significant health consequences. Diseases like diabetes can damage the mikrovazikuláris system, leading to complications such as retinopathy (damage to the blood vessels in the retina) and nephropathy (damage to the blood vessels in the kidneys). Impairments in the mikrovazikuláris network can also contribute to microvascular dysfunction, a condition implicated in various cardiovascular and neurological diseases.
