Mikrotraumata, a term originating from Greek words meaning "small" and "wound," refers to minor injuries that, while individually insignificant, can accumulate over time to cause substantial damage. This concept is most commonly applied in the context of physical health, particularly in sports and repetitive strain injuries. Repeatedly performing an action that places a small amount of stress on a particular tissue, such as a tendon or ligament, can lead to microscopic tears. Over an extended period, these small tears do not have sufficient time to heal fully before the next stress is applied, resulting in inflammation, pain, and reduced function.

Examples of mikrotraumata in sports include the repetitive jarring of joints during running or the constant micro-twisting of a joint in sports like tennis or golf. In occupational settings, typing for long hours can lead to mikrotraumata in the wrists and hands, potentially developing into conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome. The cumulative effect of these minor insults is a primary mechanism behind many overuse injuries. Prevention often involves proper technique, adequate rest and recovery, appropriate equipment, and strengthening exercises to improve tissue resilience. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, allowing tissues to heal, and addressing the underlying cause of the repetitive stress.
