Mikrotietojenkäsittely, often translated as microcomputing or personal computing, refers to the use of microcomputers, also known as microcontrollers or microprocessors, for data processing tasks. This technology emerged in the latter half of the 20th century with the development of integrated circuits, enabling the creation of small, affordable, and self-contained computing devices.

Initially, microcomputers were primarily used by hobbyists and in specialized industrial applications.
