Mikroskennelés

Mikroskennelés, often translated as micro-scanning, is a technique used in imaging and sensing to enhance resolution beyond the physical limitations of a sensor. It typically involves deliberately shifting the sensor or the object being imaged by a sub-pixel amount and acquiring multiple images. These individual images, when combined using a specific algorithm, create a final image with a higher effective resolution than any single image captured.

The principle behind mikroskennelés relies on the fact that each pixel in a sensor captures light from a specific area. By shifting the sensor by a fraction of a pixel, different parts of the scene fall onto different pixels in subsequent acquisitions. This overlapping information is then processed to reconstruct a more detailed picture, effectively interpolating between the original pixel locations.

This technique finds applications in various fields. In digital photography, it can be used to improve the detail in images, particularly in low-light conditions where a larger pixel size might be desirable for signal-to-noise ratio but a higher resolution is also needed. Scientific imaging, such as in microscopy or satellite imagery, also benefits from mikroskennelés to achieve finer details that would otherwise be unresolvable. The computational cost of processing the multiple acquired images is a factor to consider when implementing mikroskennelés.
