Mikrokäymälöitä, often translated as micro-composting toilets or small-scale composting toilets, are a type of dry toilet system designed for limited spaces and smaller user groups. They function by facilitating the decomposition of human waste through aerobic composting, a process that utilizes microorganisms in the presence of oxygen. Unlike conventional flush toilets that rely on large volumes of water, mikrokäymälöitä use significantly less or no water at all.

The design typically involves a container or chamber where waste is collected and mixed with bulking material such as sawdust, wood shavings, or coconut coir. This bulking material is crucial for absorbing moisture, providing aeration, and creating a carbon-rich environment that aids in the composting process. The aerobic bacteria break down the organic matter, reducing its volume and transforming it into a stable, compost-like material over a period of several months to a year.

Mikrokäymälöitä are often employed in off-grid situations, rural areas, tiny homes, or as an eco-friendly alternative in urban settings where traditional plumbing is not feasible or desired. They offer a sustainable solution for waste management, recycling nutrients back into the soil, and reducing water consumption.
