Miju

Miju is a term with multiple uses. The most widely recognized reference is the Miju Mishmi, an indigenous ethnic group of northeastern India.

Geography and society: The Miju Mishmi are primarily located in Arunachal Pradesh, notably in the Dibang Valley, and are one of the Mishmi communities. Traditionally, Miju Mishmi communities practice subsistence agriculture and hunter-gatherer methods, with village-based social structures and customary laws. Their cultural life includes distinctive dress, crafts, and annual festivals tied to seasonal cycles and ancestral traditions. Religious practices often blend indigenous beliefs with influences from neighboring cultures, and shamans or local ritual specialists may play important roles in community rites and healing.

Language: The Miju Mishmi language, sometimes called Miju, belongs to the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It has several local varieties and is used in daily communication, storytelling, and ritual contexts. Many Miju speakers also use regional lingua francas such as Hindi or English in education and administration.

Other uses: Beyond the ethnic group, Miju may appear as a personal name or nickname in various cultures. In East Asian naming practices, a given name transliterated as Mi-ju can be romanized as Miju.
