Migraines are a type of headache disorder characterized by recurrent, moderate to severe head pain. This pain is often unilateral, meaning it affects one side of the head, and can be throbbing or pulsating in nature. Migraines are frequently accompanied by other symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, and a heightened sensitivity to light (photophobia) and sound (phonophobia). Some individuals experience an aura before or during a migraine attack. Auras are transient neurological symptoms that can include visual disturbances like flashing lights or blind spots, sensory changes such as tingling or numbness, or speech difficulties.

Migraines are thought to involve complex interactions between nerve pathways and brain chemicals. They can be triggered by a variety of factors, including stress, certain foods and drinks, hormonal changes, changes in sleep patterns, and sensory stimuli.

Diagnosis is typically based on a patient's medical history and a description of their symptoms. While there is no cure for migraines, various treatments are available to manage pain and reduce the frequency and severity of attacks. These can include acute medications taken at the onset of a migraine and preventative medications taken regularly to reduce the number of headaches. Lifestyle modifications and stress management techniques can also be beneficial.
