Midtlinjer
Midtlinjer are central lines that indicate the middle or axis of symmetry of an object, diagram, or space. The term is used in Norwegian to describe lines that partition or align features along a central axis. In geometry, a midtlinje is a line that runs through the center of a figure and helps establish symmetry; some shapes have more than one midtlinje, depending on their symmetry properties. In anatomy, the midtlinje commonly refers to the midsagittal plane that divides the body into left and right halves. In sports, the midtlinje or halfway line marks the field division between halves and serves as the restart line after certain events. In design and architecture, midtlinjer act as axes for alignment and proportional balance, guiding the placement of elements and ensuring visual harmony. In cartography and navigation, central lines or meridians can function as midlines for reference by forming a stable frame of reference across maps. The concept is often taught in geometry and art to illustrate symmetry, proportion, and balance. Not all objects have a unique midtlinje; asymmetrical designs may have a dominant axis or several lines that approximate a central axis. Etymology: from the Norwegian words midt (middle) and linje (line).
