Microfoonrichtingen, also known as microphone polar patterns, refer to the sensitivity and directional characteristics of a microphone in capturing sound from different directions. These patterns determine how a microphone responds to sound waves arriving from various angles and are essential for selecting the appropriate microphone for specific recording or sound reinforcement applications.

Common microphone polar patterns include omnidirectional, cardioid, supercardioid, hypercardioid, and figure-eight. An omnidirectional microphone picks up sound equally from all directions, making it ideal for capturing ambient sound or group recordings. Cardioid microphones are most sensitive to sound coming from the front, with reduced sensitivity to the sides and rear, making them suitable for isolating sources in noisy environments. Supercardioid and hypercardioid patterns have even narrower front sensitivity and some sensitivity to sound from the rear, useful for placing the microphone at a distance while minimizing background noise.

Figure-eight, or bidirectional, microphones are sensitive to sound from the front and back but reject sound from the sides, often used in stereo recording techniques. The selection of a microphone pattern depends on the recording environment, the desired isolation, and spatial requirements.
