Omnidirectional describes a property of devices or systems that respond to or cover stimuli from all directions, or that provide uniform performance around a central point. The term combines omni-, meaning “all,” with directional.

In acoustics, an omnidirectional microphone has nearly equal sensitivity to sound from all directions at a given distance, producing a uniform pickup pattern in the horizontal plane. Real-world units approximate true omnidirectionality within a limited frequency range, while higher frequencies may reveal directional variation.

In radio communications, an omnidirectional antenna radiates or receives signals with roughly uniform gain in all horizontal directions. This makes them suitable for wide-area coverage, though vertical radiation patterns and terrain can influence overall performance. Practical designs often optimize the horizontal plane while accepting some variation with elevation.

In imaging, an omnidirectional camera or fisheye lenses capture wide fields of view, enabling 360-degree photography or immersive video. Such systems may rely on single wide-angle optics or multiple sensors whose outputs are stitched to form a spherical image.

In robotics and navigation, omnidirectional systems include wheels that permit holonomic motion, allowing movement in any direction without changing orientation, and sensors arranged to perceive the environment around a point in all directions.

The term is also used more broadly to describe lighting, data collection, and other technologies designed to operate without a preferred direction, though practical implementations often face physical and environmental constraints that prevent perfect omnidirectionality.
