Microbiomesgut refers to the gut microbiome, the complex and dynamic ecosystem of microorganisms living in the gastrointestinal tract. It includes bacteria, archaea, viruses, and fungi, with bacteria comprising the majority of detectable organisms. The gut microbiome is distributed along the intestinal tract, with variations between the lumen and mucosal surfaces and among different regions such as the small and large intestines.

While composition varies between individuals, core features include several dominant bacterial phyla such as Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, with other groups present in smaller numbers. Diversity tends to be higher in healthy adults and can be influenced by life stage, geography, and diet. The virome and mycobiome, though less studied, also contribute to function.

The microbiomesgut plays roles in digesting complex carbohydrates, producing short-chain fatty acids, synthesizing vitamins, shaping gut barrier integrity, and educating the immune system. The community exhibits resilience and can recover after perturbations, though alterations may persist in some individuals.

Alterations in the gut microbiome have been associated with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, metabolic syndrome, allergies, and certain neuropsychiatric disorders, though causal links remain under study. Research uses sequencing-based approaches, metagenomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics to characterize composition and function. Therapeutic strategies include diet modification, probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation in selected cases.
