A microbiologist is a scientist who studies microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae, protozoa, and sometimes prions. They may employ bioinformatics, proteomics, and high-throughput screening to analyze microbial function and interactions. Laboratory safety and biosafety practices are integral, with work conducted at levels appropriate to the organisms studied.
