Metylisalisylaatti

Metylisalisylaatti, commonly known as methyl salicylate, is the methyl ester of salicylic acid. It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic wintergreen aroma. Its molecular formula is C8H8O3 and its molar mass is 152.15 g/mol. It is soluble in alcohols and many organic solvents, with limited water solubility.

Natural occurrence and production. Methyl salicylate occurs naturally in snow of wintergreen plants, particularly Gaultheria procumbens, and is present in certain essential oils. Industrially, it is produced by esterifying salicylic acid with methanol in the presence of an acid catalyst. It can also be isolated from natural essential oils and then purified by distillation.

Uses. The compound is widely used as a flavoring agent and fragrance component in foods, beverages, and cosmetics, contributing a minty, wintergreen note. It serves as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of salicylates and pharmaceuticals, including acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin). In the medical and personal care sectors, methyl salicylate is a common ingredient in topical analgesics and rubefacients, where it provides warming sensations and helps mask medicinal odors.

Safety and regulations. Methyl salicylate can be absorbed through the skin or ingested in significant quantities, potentially causing salicylate poisoning. It is regulated in various jurisdictions for consumer products and food applications, and accidental exposure should be avoided, especially for children. Proper storage in a cool, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources is advised.
