Metropolitain

Metropolitain is a French term meaning metropolitan. In English-language usage it is often encountered as a historical or stylistic designation, and it is closely associated with the early Paris urban rail system.

In Paris, the word Metropolitain appears in historical branding of the city’s rapid transit network. The Paris public transport system was originally conceived as the Chemin de Fer Métropolitain, a metropolitan railway project, with operations beginning in the early 20th century. Early signage and branding frequently used the term Métropolitain, and many of the city’s iconic station entrances were designed in the Art Nouveau style by Hector Guimard, featuring the name in distinctive lettering. Over time the system came to be known colloquially and officially as the Métro, and the Metropolitain branding largely gave way to the shorter form. Nevertheless, the original term remains visible in historic documents, older maps, and preserved entrances.
