Metrologisk

Metrologisk is an adjective used in Scandinavian languages to describe things related to metrology, the science of measurement. Metrology encompasses the theory, science, and practice of measuring phenomena, as well as the development, maintenance, and evaluation of measurement standards and instruments. It also includes the assessment and reporting of measurement uncertainty.

The field of metrology is commonly divided into three interrelated domains. Scientific metrology focuses on the fundamental questions of measurement and the realization of units, including research on measurement methods and the realization of primary standards. Industrial metrology deals with calibration, maintenance, and quality assurance of measurement instruments used in manufacturing, engineering, and technology to ensure accuracy and consistency. Legal metrology encompasses regulatory frameworks that establish the requirements for measurement instruments used in commerce, health, safety, and environmental protection, including verification and certification processes to guarantee trustworthy measurements.

A central concept in metrology is traceability, the documented path by which a measurement result can be related to national or international standards, most notably the International System of Units (SI). National metrology institutes and the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) coordinate global efforts to maintain and disseminate accurate standards. International standards bodies, such as ISO, IEC, and OIML, contribute guidelines and frameworks for measurement methods, instrument calibration, and quality management.

In practice, metrologisk relates to methods, processes, and equipment used to obtain reliable measurement results across science, industry, and regulation. In English-language contexts, the corresponding term is metrological or metrology.
