Metis

Metis is a name that appears in several distinct domains, including Greek mythology, astronomy, and Indigenous culture in Canada.

In Greek mythology, Metis is a Titaness, daughter of Oceanus and Tethys, and the first wife of Zeus. She embodies cunning and wisdom and is the mother of Athena. In some versions of the myth, Zeus swallows Metis to prevent the birth of a child who would overthrow him, and Athena is later born from Zeus’s head.

In astronomy, Metis is the innermost known moon of Jupiter. It was discovered by the Voyager 1 spacecraft during its 1979 flyby. Metis is a small, irregularly shaped body that orbits very close to Jupiter, and it is among the smaller Jovian moons.

Métis refers to the Métis people, an Indigenous group in Canada whose culture arose from relationships between First Nations peoples and European settlers. They have a distinct culture and language, Michif. The Métis are recognized as one of the three Indigenous peoples of Canada, with regional organizations such as the Métis Nation and Métis governments operating in provinces including Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
