Meterbouwers are technicians who install, verify, and maintain metering equipment used to measure energy and other utilities. They work with electricity, gas, water, and heat meters, as well as the data-communication devices that relay readings. Employed by utility companies, meter service firms, or electrical contractors, they handle new installations, replacements, repairs, and upgrades, including the deployment of smart meters.

Key responsibilities include mounting meters in service cabinets or distribution panels, routing and connecting wiring, configuring smart meters and communication modules, performing functional tests, sealing meters, and maintaining installation documentation. They ensure compliance with electrical codes, metering standards, and safety regulations, and coordinate with customers, energy suppliers, and network operators.

Training typically combines vocational or technical education with on-the-job experience. Many meterbouwers complete an apprenticeship or hands-on program in electrical technology, often earning certifications in electrical safety and metering procedures, depending on regional rules. Proficiency with test equipment, documentation software, and basic data privacy considerations is common.

Common tools include multimeters, insulation resistance testers, crimping tools, voltage testers, and protective gear. They may work with smart-meter gateways, data-logging devices, and mounting hardware, and need knowledge of wiring practices and metering protocols.

Meterbouwers operate within regulated environments governed by national or regional standards and utility policies. The work emphasizes safety, accuracy, and privacy, and many professionals advance to senior technician, supervisor, or project-management roles.
