Meteoriittitörmäysten refers to impact events caused by meteoroids entering Earth's atmosphere and colliding with the planet's surface. These objects, often remnants from the formation of the solar system, vary greatly in size from small dust grains to large asteroids. When a meteoroid is large enough to survive its fiery passage through the atmosphere, the resulting impact can create a crater, excavate material, and generate seismic waves.

The frequency and severity of these events are directly related to the size of the impacting object. Smaller impacts are common, often manifesting as shooting stars or small meteorites that reach the ground unnoticed. Larger impacts are exceedingly rare but can have catastrophic consequences. The Chicxulub impact event, estimated to have occurred 66 million years ago, is widely believed to have been a major factor in the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs.
