Meteorelectuur

Meteorelectuur is a term used to describe the electrical phenomena observed during meteor showers or associated with meteor activity. While meteors themselves are primarily visible as streaks of light caused by friction with the atmosphere, there are instances where electrical discharges or effects are detected. These can range from subtle atmospheric perturbations to more dramatic, though rare, events.

One proposed explanation for some meteorelectuur phenomena involves the ionization trail left behind by a meteor. As a meteor burns up, it creates a plasma channel. This ionized gas can interact with the Earth's magnetic field, potentially inducing currents or generating electromagnetic pulses. Such interactions are thought to be responsible for some of the radio wave emissions detected during meteor events, a field known as meteor scatter communication.

In rarer cases, larger meteors or those with specific compositions might contribute to more significant electrical discharges within the atmosphere. These could manifest as brief flashes of light distinct from the meteor's primary glow, or as localized atmospheric electrical anomalies. However, the direct observation and definitive attribution of such events to meteoric activity are challenging, and research in this area is ongoing.
