Metarelativist

Metarelativist is a term that does not have a single fixed definition and is not widely standardized in mainstream science. In general, it is used to describe a thinker or position that engages with the meta-theory of relativity—that is, the study of the assumptions, foundations, and broader implications of the theory of relativity rather than its specific empirical predictions.

In practice, metarelativism can refer to several related ideas. Some writers use it to denote philosophers of physics who analyze the conceptual underpinnings of relativity, such as questions about observer role, synchronization conventions, Lorentz invariance, and the status of spacetime. Others employ the label for speculative or fringe views that propose a higher-order or more expansive framework beyond Einsteinian relativity, sometimes emphasizing conventional or contextual aspects of physical theories. In science fiction or popular discussion, metarelativists may be characters or authors who explore pathways to integrate relativity with other meta-theoretical ideas.

The term is not a formal scientific doctrine, nor is metarelativism recognized as a distinct field within established physics. It is more commonly found in philosophical discourse, critical essays, or speculative writings that examine how relativity is framed, taught, or extended conceptually rather than in experimental or predictive terms.

Critics argue that the label can be loosely applied or conflates rigorous analysis with speculative proposals. As such, metarelativism tends to appear as a marginal or interdisciplinary topic rather than a widely adopted branch of physics or philosophy of science.
