Metamorphismoter

Metamorphismoter is a hypothetical geological phenomenon that describes the process by which existing metamorphic rocks are further transformed under conditions of elevated temperature and pressure, leading to changes in their mineralogy and texture. This process is distinct from primary metamorphism, which occurs when rocks are initially subjected to metamorphic conditions. Metamorphismoter implies a subsequent or repeated metamorphic event.

The conditions required for metamorphismoter would typically exceed those of the initial metamorphism. This could involve burial to greater depths, proximity to a sustained heat source such as a deep magma intrusion, or the significant stress associated with tectonic plate collisions. The minerals within the original metamorphic rock would recrystallize or react to form new minerals that are stable under the new, more intense conditions. For example, a low-grade schist might be transformed into a higher-grade gneiss.

The resulting rocks from metamorphismoter would exhibit distinct textures and mineral assemblages compared to their precursor metamorphic rocks. These differences could be observed in the field and analyzed in thin sections under a microscope. Evidence for metamorphismoter might include relict minerals from the earlier metamorphic event, or textures indicative of partial melting and subsequent recrystallization. While the term is not standard in mainstream geological literature, it serves as a conceptual tool to describe the potential for progressive metamorphic alteration of already metamorphosed rocks.
