Metallmatrixkompositer, often abbreviated as MMC, are advanced materials formed by combining a metal or alloy matrix with one or more reinforcing phases. The reinforcing phase, which can be ceramic particles, fibers, or whiskers, is dispersed within the metal matrix to enhance its properties. This combination aims to leverage the ductility and toughness of the metal matrix with the high strength, stiffness, and wear resistance of the reinforcing phase.

The fabrication of MMCs involves various methods, including liquid metallurgy (stir casting, infiltration), solid-state processing (powder metallurgy, diffusion bonding), and in-situ techniques. The choice of manufacturing process depends on the matrix material, reinforcement type, and desired microstructure. Careful control of the interface between the matrix and reinforcement is crucial, as it significantly influences the overall performance of the composite.

MMCs exhibit a range of improved mechanical properties compared to their unreinforced counterparts. These include higher tensile strength, increased Young's modulus, improved fatigue resistance, and enhanced wear characteristics. However, their increased density and potential for brittleness can be drawbacks.

Applications for MMCs are found in industries where high performance is critical. These include aerospace, where their lightweight and strength are advantageous for structural components; automotive, for applications like brake rotors and engine parts; and sporting goods, for components requiring high stiffness and low weight. The ongoing development of MMCs focuses on improving processing techniques, understanding interfacial phenomena, and exploring new material combinations to expand their applicability.
