Metallmatris

Metallmatris refers to the continuous metal phase in a metal matrix composite (MMC). In an MMC, a ductile metal forms the matrix and is reinforced by hard phases such as ceramics or carbon materials. The matrix binds the reinforcement, carries most of the load, and provides toughness and formability, while the reinforcement enhances stiffness, strength, and wear resistance.

Common matrices are aluminum, magnesium, titanium, and steel. Reinforcements include ceramic particles (for example silicon carbide SiC, alumina Al2O3, boron carbide B4C), as well as whiskers or short fibers and, in some cases, graphite for lubrication. MMCs are typically categorized as particulate MMCs, whisker or short-fiber reinforced MMCs, and continuous-fiber reinforced MMCs, reflecting the shape and distribution of the reinforcement.

Properties of metallmatris composites depend on the combination of matrix and reinforcement. The matrix provides ductility and toughness, while the reinforcement raises stiffness, high-temperature stability, and wear resistance. However, the addition of hard reinforcements often reduces ductility and fracture toughness, and the materials can be more sensitive to processing conditions and thermal expansion mismatch. Cost and machinability are common practical challenges.

Manufacturing methods include stir casting, squeeze casting, and other liquid-state processes for particulate MMCs, as well as powder metallurgy, diffusion bonding, and additive manufacturing for more complex architectures. Interfacial bonding between the matrix and reinforcement is critical and can influence strength and reliability.

Applications of metallmatris composites span automotive components (pistons, brake rotors), aerospace parts, sports equipment, and wear-resistant tooling, where high stiffness-to-weight ratio and good high-temperature performance are advantageous.
