Metalliioon

Metalliioon is a hypothetical concept in inorganic chemistry referring to a metal-derived ion with an exceptionally high positive charge. Unlike conventional metal ions such as Fe3+ or Al3+, metalliions are proposed to exist only under special conditions or within theoretical models, where extreme ligand fields or confinement stabilize unusually high oxidation states. The term is not an official IUPAC designation and is largely found in speculative discussions rather than in established experimental literature.

In theoretical work, metalliions are envisaged as species formed when a metal center interacts with highly electron-withdrawing or multidentate ligands, or is embedded in a lattice or gas-phase environment that supports extreme charge localization. Computational studies using density functional theory and ab initio methods have explored scenarios in which transient metalliions could exhibit very high charge densities, short lifetimes, and strong reactivity toward ligands or substrates.

Predicted properties include high electrophilicity, strong oxidizing or reducing capabilities depending on the surrounding medium, and a tendency to form tightly bound complexes. Stabilization would rely on ligand frameworks that can delocalize or compensate the charge, as well as environmental factors such as extreme pressure, low temperature, or matrix isolation.

Applications remain speculative; potential areas include catalysis involving multi-electron transfer, advanced materials research, or energy storage concepts in hypothetical devices. In science fiction, metalliioon is sometimes used to describe exotic ions that enable unusually efficient bonding or plasmonic effects. In real chemistry, metalliioon remains a theoretical construct rather than an observed species.
