Metakrüülestrid

Metakrüülestrid, often shortened to methacrylates, are a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of a methacrylate functional group. This group consists of a vinyl group directly attached to a carbonyl group which is in turn attached to an oxygen atom, with a methyl group also attached to the carbon of the vinyl group. The general chemical formula can be represented as CH2=C(CH3)COOR, where R is an alkyl or aryl group.

These compounds are monomers, meaning they are small molecules that can link together to form long chains, a process known as polymerization. The polymerization of methacrylates leads to the formation of polymethacrylates, which are a type of acrylic polymer. The properties of the resulting polymer are heavily influenced by the nature of the 'R' group in the ester. For instance, methyl methacrylate polymerizes to form poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), commonly known as acrylic glass or Plexiglas, which is a transparent and rigid plastic.
