Meszesedése

Meszesedése refers to the process of calcification or hardening that can occur in biological tissues or materials. In medicine, it commonly describes the deposition of calcium salts in soft tissues, which are normally not calcified. This can occur in various parts of the body, including blood vessels, heart valves, joints, and even organs like the kidneys or lungs.

The causes of meszesedése are diverse. It can be a consequence of aging, wear and tear, or specific medical conditions such as chronic inflammation, infections, or metabolic disorders. In some cases, it is an idiopathic process, meaning the cause is unknown. While calcification itself is a passive process, it can lead to functional impairments. For example, calcified arteries become less flexible and can contribute to hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Calcified heart valves may not open or close properly, affecting blood flow.

Diagnosis of meszesedése typically involves medical imaging techniques such as X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, or ultrasound. The appearance of calcifications on these images helps in identifying the location and extent of the process. Treatment strategies depend on the affected tissue and the severity of symptoms. In many instances, meszesedése is asymptomatic and does not require intervention. However, when it causes significant functional problems or pain, treatments may focus on managing the underlying cause, relieving symptoms, or, in some cases, surgical intervention to remove or bypass calcified structures.
