Mesokortikalen
Mesokortikalen, or the mesocortical dopaminergic pathway, is a dopaminergic tract in the brain that originates in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of the midbrain and projects to parts of the prefrontal cortex, including the dorsolateral and medial prefrontal regions. It is one of the major dopamine pathways in the brain, alongside the mesolimbic, nigrostriatal, and tuberoinfundibular systems. The mesokortikalen pathway mainly uses dopamine as its neurotransmitter, with dopamine receptors, particularly the D1 family, playing a key role in its signaling within the cortex.
Functionally, the mesokortikalen system modulates higher-order cognitive processes. It is involved in executive functions such as
Clinical relevance, especially in psychiatry, centers on the pathway’s role in schizophrenia and related disorders. Hypofunction
